OK, .. making some progress. Looks like a CD image boots a lot faster than
an installed image, .. using Mint 32 no codec and seems to be fairly
usable.

Only problem is, the *data* for the user is in /dev/sdb2 (the system is in
/dev/sdb1), and the CD image mounts /dev/sdb to /CDROM, so it is
impossible to access /dev/sdb2.

Anyone know if a trick to mount /dev/sdb2 when /dev/sdb is mounted?
