there is pretty weird in any case <g>!

That's what I thought, .. but I found good documentation that said
differently:

Anyway, that is the reason it was not coming up without the 'auto's, ..
but that still leaves us with a bogus DHCP address; I commented the
remaining two lines in /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf.

Now it's assinging a bogus 169 to eth1 and on connectivity. Bummer.
