[Cialug] Slack group?

I would disagree. I use IRC too. Where I see slack is more of a
combination of this list and IRC. You have permanent, searchable
groups(channels). I hadnt visited the startup one for a couple of
months and I was able to sign in and go back over the discussions for
those months. IRC is real-time but as far as I know not searchable
with no history on it unless you are logged in or have some bot
recording everything said on a channel.

Slack has the many 'integrations', posting news bits to channels via
bots, real-time video or screen sharing via hangouts, etc.
http://slackstack.io/ for a list of add-ons.

We have been bouncing between hipchat and slack for work and decided
that slack fit the bill better. It's feature-set is ever expanding.

The free slack has a message search history of I believe 10K and yes,
if you want to do some of the things like allow people to connect as
guests or do some of the integrations, you need to upgrade but we
havent found the need to do that with my team using it so far.

With this list, the messages are stored in my email, so I must go back
and search email, with IRC I dont have any way to go back over those
unless I was on the channel at the time and logged them somewhere.

It just seems dated to me. I have been using IRC for 20+ years,
mailing lists for longer..seems like its time to combine the two. I
can understand the resistance..if it works for you then why change but
I found that it brings my team closer together so I thought I'd
propose it for this group.
