Rather than encoding an end-of-sentence as a sequence of three characters, why not just use a unique end-of-sentence delimiter (or a unique end-of-abbreviation delimiter)? Then your display system could apply whatever spacing you prefer at end-of-sentence, just like it does for indent depth.
