[Cialug] Rookie installer having trouble

UHMMM. Well, I have some practice using dual boot. I had an old machine some time ago that had two versions of Windows on it. And I used a machine for a while that had both Windows and Linux on it and they both used dual boot. And I have no experience with PC virtualization so I don't know where to start. As can be seen from my problems so far, I have a lot to learn, and I didn't want to throw virtualization into the mix, yet. If I can get Linux and Windows up and running on the same machine that will be a good first step, or first few steps. Then I can think of adding virtualization to the mix. In an ideal world, that's probably the way to go, but I'm going for baby steps right now. I'm hoping to be not too far from a working machine, most of the time.

Adding my $0.25 here, why are you dual booting? Why not use some sort of virtualization? Yes, I'll admit my bias towards all things virtual, but I really don't see any compelling reason to dual boot any more. Windows XP should work fine under KVM and you can completely isolate it from the network by not giving it any network interfaces at all.
