The primary federal law protecting your online privacy was written when
Ronald Reagan was President, I was in the 6th grade, and there was no such
thing as the World Wide Web. And its age is showing.

Verizon and AT&T handed the feds data on 1.3 million customers in 2011.
Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, and Twitter disclosed the data of
approximately 64,000 users. And why wouldn't the enterprising fed go
straight to the data source, when doing so requires nothing more than a
sternly worded subpoena and no warrant at all?

It's time for the ECPA to grow up, and there is legislation proposed to
make it do so. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah)
are working to pass S.607, but they need help from their fellow legislators
and the President.
