Depending on how the system was (mis)configured, other services may stop and start besides X. You'll need to look in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d for any K scripts also.

Yep.  Just issue "init 3".

Then, when you've done what you need to do, do "init 5" to get back to
where you were.
