Sorry, have not had time to post the result - I was using master.cf from
the *old* system, which would not work on the new system because it is now
not running chroot'd. Grabbed the *new* master.cf and all was well.

Now, if I can just get the damn box to run with static IPs I can go home
<sigh>.
