Found this thread, it turned out their AV, Windows Defender was at fault.

Subject: [Cialug] Can't open files in Samba directory

I inherited a weird Samba configuration some time back, .. for example, almost all of the files are 777/SGID, root user, and a specific group for access rights.

For some strange reason, directories and files are 'refusing to open' via CIFS, can't see anything in the Samba logs except some weird error
messages:

dl-pc.log: dl-pc (192.168.0.111) couldn't find service h_data.exe

Why would this pc be trying to open the share with an *extension*, and could this affect other users? Any other thoughts oh troubleshooting?

	TIA!
