To keep this off politics, per se, I'd like to mention that I see the
stories of the Internet's past fading away.  Is that evitable?  Is
there some way to save the geek's humble yet confident sense of
community that made the information revolution of the past 4 or 5
decades possible?

That knowledge has not been integrated into the rest of society.  Most
people, even most computing-related professionals, don't understand
where we came from.  It's still possible to lose it.  We're not like
the practice of law or medicine, which can sustain a concerted assault
on its foundations for a long time before it finally is destroyed.
