There are also direct filesystem debugging/editing tools. If you just want to go in and delete things that are broken and you are willing to lose you can edit the filesystem and get it back into a "valid" state without necessarily running the whole recovery scheme. Then fsck is just a standard verification run and shouldn't spend any time chasing bad references or rescuing files. But you can also bork things pretty badly, because it won't stop you from doing dangerous things.
