You might find this interesting, http://vagrantup.com/  Just a little work
up front with this (and chef) has resulted in some serious developer
happiness.  My guys can spawn a virtual box vm at anytime with all the
services in production running on it properly configured.  (8Gig of ram on
your MBP make this possible! ;)   They have the the option to map back to
their local drive to substitute uncommitted local code for specific services
and test the heck out of it before committing, or they can point it at
a specific branch of the main repo.
