I strongly suspect that it's not normal but that some program or driver has
gone haywire. Unfortunately, PPC is not an officially maintained port of
Ubuntu.

Alas, I would not even suggest xubuntu. Recent demonstrations show xubuntu
using more system resources than Ubuntu does.

I'd look for a 2d only environment to get started with. YDL is the way to go
(as I understand it) and don't sweat the PS3 stuff, it's still PPC
architecture.
