This article, especially the comments have several suggestions.
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/407 They suggest gmessage, 
xmessage, kdialog, zenity, osd_cat or notify-send which is bundled with 
libnotify-bin.

If you need to send a notification across the LAN something like 
smbclient -M might work or LinPopUp http://linpopup2.sourceforge.net/
