You might look through this site starting here-

http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-ubuntu-natty-narwhal-ubuntu-11.04-ispconfig-2

Very good step by step instructions. I have used this site many times.

I managed to aquire an older server and have installed Ubuntu 11 on it.
It boots fine and I figured out how to set a manual IP and associated
mask and gateway but I still can't ping anything by name. You will need to set some name servers, .. if you don't know ones for your
ISP, you can use 8.8.8.8 (Google).

Try this, look at the section on editing /etc/resolv.conf :

https://help.ubuntu.com/11.04/serverguide/C/network-configuration.html

BTW, Lee, you might want to remove the reference to canned meat by-products from the subject before you reply, otherwise some people will filter that out.
