I agree.  I will have to work on that.

I wonder if I should do that just for the cache dir?

well, now that you're in the correct directory, I'd apply the other 
chown wwwdata/chmod o-w suggestion (probably even chmod g-w)

777 is never the answer, even if it is easy :)
