If I remember correctly, VMWare has a way to re-map the key sequence. In
virtualbox I have mine set to right-ctrl since I never use that key
normally.

doing  a quick google I see the suggestion to use ctrl+alt+space, then
release space and hit F1 (while still holding ctrl+alt).
