Try holding the shift key during boot to get the grub menu.  (Got that from
Google for Ubuntu, I usually use Fedora)

Note that the vmware logo is a simple video overlay, it's not a boot phase
or in the way of the keyboard.  Holding the shift key, if that works, should
be done all the way through.
