Dave,

Give Mandriva a try. The underlying system will be familiar to you since 
it's redhat based. I've run both it and Kubuntu, IMHO Mandriva is much 
more polished than Kubuntu.

You can download the Mandriva One bootable CD and try it, you don't even 
need to install.

On a side note, after installing Kubuntu, I was really impressed with
how polished the kde gui is.  After being a redhat guy for years, I'd
consider running my rhel workstation as the guest and make Kubunto my
everyday machine.
