Depending on the age of the house and how it was built, placing wi-fi  
in the basement can cause it to have a very short range, even within  
the house.

Of course, my house for some reason has built-in faraday cages (a wire  
mesh between a drywall layer and a plaster layer), who knows why.   
This makes wi-fi and cell service a pain but might be a selling point  
for some people.

I've had much better luck with range by placing the router as high as  
possible within the house.
