I think someone else here mentioned this, but there's an PRC emulator
for the Pre which you can try for 30(?) days, and purchase for around
$30. It's not perfect, but apparently it's pretty good.

They give you root out of the box!! And a real X environment! If they
were available for Sprint, I'd go buy one.
