Maybe he meant Ctrl-Alt-F7.  If what you are looking at is one of the
virtual tty terminals, and X is still running on tty7, then
Ctrl-Alt-F7 should return you to it.

But it sounds like your rebooted into a LiveCD.  To reboot again, you
could try to type "shutdown -r now" at the command prompt, and make
sure the LiveCD is out.
