   I can sometimes pick up someone's wifi from the other side of the 
lake when on the deck so possibly quite a ways.  Though usually I just 
use my treo for reading/posting from the lake, there's good US cellular 
and patchy sprint service at the lake, I think verizon piggy-backs on 
the us cellular tower.
