My VW Jetta has that, and it is indeed really lame.  I played with it at the
very beginning and then never touched it again.  There's no clutch or
anything -- basically you can hint to the car you prefer
current_automatic_gear +/- 1, and it will still override you if it thinks
you're an idiot.
