You can have either with neither :-)

An interface is how something physically hooks to a network and a route 
tells the computer how to get somewhere. The most common case is you 
have a route to the 'local' computers that share the ethernet with you 
and a 'default' route that tells your computer how to get to anything 
that isn't local.
