[Cialug] Naïve DVD question

I need to make a copy of a video DVD. It is only about 25 minutes and my 
current copy is on a DVD-R so i know it will fit on regular media. But, 
i've never tried copying a DVD before. I've found instructions on how 
to rip one and re-encode it for smaller size, but i don't want that. I 
want an identical copy.

Can i treat a video DVD like a data CD and just use dd to rip an image 
and then cdrecord to burn it to disc? Or is it more like an audio CD 
that requires more specialized software to rip (i usually use 
cdparanoia for CDs)?
