I would never recommend putting /usr/local before /usr.  The system
executables should always take precedence from a security perspective.  I'm
not sure how you made the change to the PATH variable, so I don't know why
when you logged out and back in it didn't take.

As for the misprint of /usr/rc.d as opposed to /etc/rc.d, it must have been
a typo.  Is this a first edition book?  The path in FreeBSD hasn't changed
in any recent versions.
