No gnome on this box, so it looks like Orca is out.  As for
speech-dispatcher, the package appears to be broken in debian sid
right now, which is what I run on some of my plaything machines.  So
that one is my own damn fault for running unstable.  I don't actually
care about this problem enough to switch distros or debug the .deb
today.

I will keep speech-dispatcher in mind, though.  Possibly I will try it
on a more sensible machine when I get home.

As for "echo hello world | festival --tts", I turned my speakers way
up, and I noticed it gives me some quiet hissing and clicking noises.
Maybe it's set on some alien language. <g>
