Microchip will send you USB enabled 18F2455 (or etc) microcontroller
for free. You could wire one directly to the USB port and then hot
glue some LEDs and knobs to your 3.5" faceplate and have them
interface to your computer.

Or the arduino, which requires no EEPROM burner or muratic acid (but
where's the fun in that?).
