Some people that own a big truck do need it - for work, or because they
frequently haul things or tow with it. But a lot (I'd argue the
majority) of truck / suv owners don't need them. The could get by with a
smaller vehicle. How many people with a 4x4 truck or SUV have ever had
them off-road?

As Dan J. once pointed out to me, you can rent a truck when you need it,
and doing that is much cheaper than actually owning a truck.

Of course... I don't "need" my convertable sports car either. :)
