[Cialug] lvm/resize2fs on /

I've got a virtual machine running / on an lvm.  I created a new 
(virtual) disk, added it to the volume group, and extended the logical 
volume to it.  but now I can't run resize2fs on it, because it's /

I booted to knoppix, but it can't see the volume group (automatically at 
least, I didn't know what to do to make it see the group)

anybody know a way to resize /?
