Here's an off-the-wall idea I just had.  As such, it is untried and
untested, but I think you've got nothing to lose in giving it a go...

* Use dd to copy the first sector from a similar drive (if you have
one available) to one file.
* Use dd to create an image of the failing drive, minus the first
sector to another file.
* cat them together and try to mount the resulting drive image.

If you decide to try that, let me know your results!
