Having been a big fan of cobalt in the past, I've watched this project
for years, however it feels too out of date to be useful.

I've been using ISPConfig http://www.ispconfig.org/ for coming up on a
year now. It's not nearly as user friendly as the cobalt OS, but it
works on many different Linux distributions and has awesome step-by-step
instructions to set it up. It does all the essential stuff (DNS, mail,
ftp, www, db and ssh/shell). I do wish it were a bit easier to use.
