You can boot into single user mode...

at the grub menu, highlight your kernel (should be highlighted by
default) and press e (for edit). Highlight the line that says something
about boot/vmlinuz/ (its really long) and hit e again. This will take
you to an editor. Move your cursor to the end of the line and add a
space and then type the word "single" (without quotes). Hit Enter, to go
back to the screen that shows the four or five lines. Hit b to boot.
This will take you into single user mode. You are root. You can do
whatever you want (like fix /etc/hosts). Once you type exit or reboot,
the computer will go back to working the way it usually does. (unless
your format your hard drive)

An easier option: if your grub menu has a "recovery mode" option, this
does the same thing... puts you into single user mode with out all the
extra steps.
