[Cialug] X.org corrupted mouse cursor

Hello. A couple months ago i replaced the hard drive in my main machine,
which had been running Debian Sarge. I installed Debian Etch on the new
drive. There is an X windows problem i've had ever since that is rather
annoying. On X (among other GUIs), the cursor may change shape
depending on what is beneath it. On Etch (which uses X.org), when the
cursor ought to change shape it becomes corrupted. The cursor appears
as a large block about an inch square, with random pixels colored in
and the rest transparent. When i move the mouse cursor to an area where
it should revert to normal, it does. But it is not easy to figure out
what i'm clicking on while the pointer is corrupted.

Any idea what causes this, or how to fix it? I'm not very familiar with
X terminology, so even some keywords that i could use for Google might
be helpful. I don't know if it matters, but my main machine is quite
old; i think the graphics card is a Matrox Millenium II, but X supports
is quite well. Thanks in advance.
