For GigE I've had really good performance and compatibility (FreeBSD
6.x ,Linux 2.6.x,Windows 2k+) with all of the Intel Pro/1000 flavor
cards (Except the drivers don't come with most Windows installs.)
The RealTek 8169 (in FreeBSD and Linux) has been pretty good. The
chipset is been pretty good but the manufacturing is truly "Chip de
jour".

I've used several version of the Pro/1000, motherboard embeded, PCI,
PCI-X, PCIe and it has all be a good experience.
