[Cialug] Larry Ellison is posturing again. Everyone watch out!

I don’t know if this is the place to ask this question, but I’ll give it a
shot. I attended the Central Iowa Java User Group last week and Sun
Microsystems did a demo of Java Studio Creator. They said they were
releasing free versions of everything they make for developers, including
Solaris 10. I’m currently running SUSE Linux 9.3 Professional, but my
employer runs Solaris 10. I’m thinking it would be a good time to reformat
the hard drive and install Solaris 10. Here’s my naïve question – is
Solaris 10 Linux or something else?

I got SUSE Linux, because Novell is developing ASP.NET for Linux
(www.mono-project.com <http://www.mono-project.com/> ), but Mono also runs
on Solaris 10. I like being able to choose open source software written in
any language and run it on any platform, so I’m interested in having .NET
and Java (and PHP) running at the same time.

This is being reported widely in the news in relation to Red Hat's recent
purchase of JBoss. There has been talk about Oracle buying Novell (SuSE) to
compete with Red Hat. This is mostly tripe as Novell does not appear to be
anywhere near a situation that would warrant a buyout. And now Larry
Ellison (Oracle) is making comments about wiping various Linux distros off
the map including both Red Hat and SuSE. He might be the 2nd richest man in
the software industry, but he's certainly no runner up in having his head
shoved up his ass.
