Quake 4 (for Windows) was released today. They're also planning to 
release a Linux version, but it will be "delayed a week or two".

They mention that they re-wrote some of the Linux code in SDL. Doom 3 
for Linux ran pretty well... but was a little slower than the Windows 
version on the same hardware. Maybe this will bring it up to speed a bit.

p.s. Has anyone messed with the Quake 3 source code yet, since it's been 
released as GPL? I've looked at it and attempted to compile it, but 
haven't been too successful with anything.
