UPS War Stories (was: Re: [Cialug] k12ltsp)

I was replacing a battery in an APC UPS while it was running - you are
supposed to be able to do that.  As I plugged the second battery lead in
BANG! FLASH! My ears were ringing, "am I dead?"  It sounded like .22 in the
computer room and one of the battery leads was completely melted away.  

Fortunately the UPS stayed up but it was about a week before I had enough
nerve to revisit the stupid thing.
