#isulugs is still going.  Not strong, but stronger than it did. 
Takes a while with anything to hit critical mass, especially if
you don't promote it much, which we haven't.

lists and irc fill different niches, IMO, but are both useful. 
I think a lot of getting-to-know-you social chatter, trash
talking, and other fun but not-necessarily-serious community
building kind of exchanges are great for IRC and not so great
for mailing lists.  

Meaty fact-based, detail-oriented discussions, vice versa.

I-need-a-quick-pointer stuff works better on IRC iff that
channel has hit a certain critical mass such that someone is on
and paying attention in a time frame that makes it more speedy
than a mailing list, which few LUG-type lists do, so far as I've
seen.
