I have lost far more Maxtor drives than any other brand.  I am to the
point where if a workstation has a problem, and it uses a Maxtor, I 
declare a disk error and replace it with a Seagate or Western Digital.
It entails a rebuild of the system, which usually fixes the problem,
and it takes the amazingly flaky drive out of the picture.
