Yes, that is faulty logic.  But also remember that most of their
customers are using Mediacom's DNS and not running their own.  If
Mediacom's DNS servers were freaking out, I'm sure they would get a
flood of support calls, and that would (hopefully) raise a red flag for
them.  One person calling in with DNS issues does not raise the flag.

Have you tried Jon's suggestion yet?  It sounds like your hints file may
have been replaced with an out-dated version when you re-built your DNS.
 Following Jon's steps below should give you the latest version.
