Subject: [Cialug] "stuck" process

I have a messed up X session running on a server, that's using all of
the CPU time, and I can't kill it. ps output is:

root 2036 99.6 0.0 0 0 ? R 11:46 156:42 [X]

I do a "kill -9 2036" but it doesn't die. I have killed most of the
other related processes like KDE stuff, but this one won't go away.

At the console, there's a goofy looking screen with messed up colors,
but you can move the X cursor around. It's not accepting any keyboard
input - i.e. hitting caps lock doesn't even toggle the LED. Tried
various "ctrl-alt-bkspace" and "ctrl-alt-F1" things and nothing
responds.

Any ideas? It's not the end of the world - I can reboot the server, but
have to kick a couple of users off for a minute. I'll probably just wait
till people go home for the day & reboot it.

In the meantime... I was able to use "renice" to set its priority really
low, so at least the machine is responding better.

-dc
