You should be able to do this. I do this on my Dell laptop - I can 
switch between a usb wheel mouse and the ps/2 trackpad, or use them both 
at the same time.

I can email you the pointers section from my xconfig when I get home, if 
you'd like. I don't have anything custom in there, just what mdk 10.1 wrote.

At one time, I had my old laptop set up with the trackpad, trackstick, 
usb wheel mouse, and a serial mouse, just for fun. You could move all 4 
at the same time.
