Don't use a blog per se...

If you're looking to run something on your own server there are a ton of 
options.

I've used a few of the phpNuke / phpSlash type packages which are like a 
blog, but with a lot more features. Before Tony has a chance to mention 
it... try Geeklog. :p

Freshmeat.net shows 61 hits on "blog"... I'm sure you can find a project 
that meets your needs, or you could customize.
