In my last job we used shell script(bash) on our HP9000(HP-UX).  You can 
perform some rather sophisticated tasks with it.  For instance, I wrote a 
script to take a single file of contract ammortizations and divide the file up 
into individual files for each contract, with the contract number as the 
filename.  We also kicked a number of scripts off with cron to archive log 
files, tar, purge directories, monitor logons, etc.
