In my experience, upgrading any RPM-based distribution can be a gamble.
I've done a number of RH and Mandr/ake/iva upgrades, usually they work
fine, sometimes there are small glitches, sometimes they die horribly.

Always backup important stuff first. I've never had one totally corrupt
the disk or anything, but I've had to boot in rescue mode to recover
data after an upgrade bombed.

If you're in a hurry, it may actually be faster to backup your data, do
a fresh install, and restore. Even on a 1ghz machine, the process where
it searches the RPM database and figures out what to upgrade may take a
couple of hours. That same machine can probably complete an install in
15 minutes.
