Jon,
I've been using MythTV for some time and like it alot.  It's easy to set 
up but depending on your video capture card, it can be a pleasant or 
painful setup.

I've got a Happaugue PVR250 that I bought a few years ago, and am 
running Debian on my myth.  There are a few tuturials that are helpful, 
I'll post after I find them again......
