IMHO, we should be help people in such a way that they learn how to 
support themselves.

Sometimes "read the man page" or "google for it" is appropriate, if it's 
obvious that the person hasn't done any research. If you don't do it 
tactfully, that doesn't help much with the "promotion" issue.
