PHP, in my opinion has a shorter learning curve and can handle 99% of
the web-based scripting that you might want to do. Perl tends to have a
slightly longer learning curve, but is also a good tool for 99% of what
you need to do, and a better choice for the 1% of the weird things you
might want to do.
